Larry:  I spoke too soon when I last communicated with you.  At 51,027 miles and 3 months out of warranty, my oil cooler  and EGR cooler had to be replaced.  Ford agreed to pay 55% but I'm pushing them to pay the entire 2K.  Wrote to the Ford CEO today since it appears this is a big problem with the 6.0 diesels (look on the internet).  We'll see what happens from here.  One item I noticed that a number of bloggers indicated they installed a front end filter to keep the oil cooler from stopping up.  May still look into this.

I'm sorry to hear that. I haven't heard too much about the oil cooler, but the EGR cooler is a very common problem. The symptoms mimic those of bad head gaskets, so make sure that they check those too! there is also an EGR cooler bypass kit available aftermarket, that eliminates the cooler. It's not legal of course, since it bypasses the emission controls.

Thanks for the info. No problems lately, but Ford replaced the EGR valve in '05 and recently the fuel pump failed. Other than that, my truck has been problem free. It was built in March '04 so Ford may have fixed some of the problems the earlier 6.0's had.

Merry Christmas and Happy Camping to you and your family.

The EGR valve can get clogged, and cause running problems. It is easily cleaned. A fuel pump failure is rare, but HPOP and injector failures are not uncommon.

Good Luck with your truck, when they're running right, the 6.0 is a wonderful engine!

Merry Christmas to you and yours, and Many Happy Camping days!

Larry: I noticed you also have a 2004 Ford with the 6.0 diesel and that you have new head gaskets, EGR cooler, etc. How many miles and what did the Ford mech say caused this?

    Thanks,

I don't recall the exact mileage when the trouble started, but it was less than 50k. I first noticed a whistling noise, and coolant was "puking" from the outgas tank. There really weren't any other symptoms, but I knew from reading on thedieselstop.com that this could be serious.

I don't recall that the tech gave a reason, but this is a very common problem with the early 6.0's. He replaced the EGR cooler etc, while troubleshooting the head gaskets. I learned that the best way to prevent this from happening again was to have studs installed, so I spent the extra $500 for ARP head studs. Some dealers are not willing to do this, mine was! later, the vanes in the turbo started sticking, and they installed a rebuilt turbo. I've about 70,000 on it now, and haven't had any other problems.

Are you having some problems with your 6.0?

Larry, thanks for the comment on the walkie-talkie's, the units were less than 3 years old, never had the batteries installed, actually took them out of their 3 pk zip lok bags and installed in radios, placred in
charger, waited to charge up and use but never charged up, thanks again for suggestion, will give it a try, edd2008.
